About Us

The new Northcliffe Park Crown Green Bowling Club was formed in January 2020 with just 8 members and has gradually increased over the years to 30 members at this current time.

The green, which was created in the 1930’s, has had many clubs associated with it over the years. When we moved in to the clubhouse we found an array of ledgers which showed the minutes of various meetings over the decades along with photographs of the Men’s and Ladies Team together with the honours boards showing their successes.

Many local people have happy memories of those times gone by and how busy it was on match days and we aim to bring those days back as we continue to grow the club.

In recent years we have had success is a number of the league cups and individual members have triumphed in local competitions as you can see in the Club Matters section of our site. Our philosophy at the club is that while winning is great it is really about enjoying yourself and having fun.

We are a friendly and supportive club and if you would like to join us or come along to ‘have a go’ at bowling then please contact us using the details you can find in the Who’s Who section of the Club Matters page.

Why bowl ?

It’s normal to feel slightly apprehensive about starting something new, but bowls is a sport that is easy to take up. The rules of the game are relatively simple, the basic technique is not complex and you don’t need lots of new kit.

As a sport, crown green bowling has many benefits.

  • Playing bowls is very doable. Whatever your physique, bowls is a sport for everybody that will help improve your fitness levels and mental wellbeing as you walk, bend and stretch outside in the fresh air.
  • Bowls is not expensive. To get going you don’t need to buy lots of new kit and clubs like ours put on taster sessions and lend you the equipment for free. Even when you get the bug, a set of your own bowls and joining the club can cost as little as £90.
  • Compared to most sports, age, and gender differences have less of an effect on a game of bowls, so it’s a perfect sport to spend time and enjoy a bit of friendly competition with your friends and family.
  • Bowls clubs are sociable places full of people looking to have fun, so bowls is a great way to relax, make new friends and feel part of your local community.

“Bowls is a sport that takes seconds to learn – but a lifetime to master”

When Can I Play ?

The bowling green is open from April until the end of September.

Every Tuesday and Thursday throughout the season we run social bowling sessions from 10am to 12:30pm. Many people come to this who just want to play for fun with a group of friends, but it is also a chance for members to have some practice and improve their game.

People are always on hand to show you the ropes or help you to develop your game.

There is a small charge for the use of the green, but this includes all the equipment you need, and we always throw in a mug of tea or coffee and there might even be a biscuit.

League Bowling

The club is a member of two league associations; the Airedale and Wharfedale and the Worth Valley.

We currently play in the following leagues

Airedale and Wharfedale Tuesday evening pairs.

Airedale and Wharfedale Wednesday afternoon singles.

Airedale and Wharfedale Wednesday evening pairs.

Worth Valley Monday afternoons The Vets pairs (over 60’s)

Worth Valley Saturday afternoon singles.

To play in any of these leagues you must be registered with the Crown Green Bowls Association (CGBA).

There is a one-off registration fee to obtain your CGBA membership number which is all you need to start playing league matches.

Taster Sessions

From April to September on the first Sunday of every month between 1pm and 3pm we have a taster session at the club. Our first taster session of 2026 will be on Sunday 5th April.  This is an open afternoon to give people the chance to come and “have a go” at bowling.

We have all of the equipment that you need to play and our club members will be there to show you how to play the game and answer any questions that you may have about the club or the sport in general. To protect the green we just ask that you please wear flat shoes or trainers (not sandals).

Our Sunday sessions are all about fun. Come along, bring the family, and have a great afternoon trying something new. Even if you just want to watch, then come along to have a chat and a cuppa !

Northcliffe Park Crown Green Bowling Club

Welcome

About Us

The new Northcliffe Park Crown Green Bowling Club was formed in January 2020, and had 38 members. The green, which was created in the 1930’s, has had many clubs associated with it. When we came, we found an array of ledgers which showed the minutes of various meetings over the decades, as well as photographs of the Men’s Trophies which had been won and the Ladies Teams. Many local people have happy memories of those times gone by and how busy it was on match days.

Sadly, many clubs are closing due to low member numbers, which is a great shame as the sport brings valuable benefits. There’s a sense of camaraderie with great social opportunities as well as the physical benefits of gentle exercise and keeping your mind occupied.

Our philosophy at the club is that while winning is good, we’re not too bothered whether we win or lose – as long as we’re enjoying it. It really is about enjoyment and having fun. We are a happy, friendly club and if you would like to join us or come along to ‘have a go’ at bowling please contact us.
